Unable to WiFi sync between MacOS X and iOS

According to 1Password on my iPhone it hasn't been able to synchronize with my computer for 14 weeks now. I'm currently using version 5.1 (510027) on my Yosemite computer, and I'm using version 5.2 on my iPhone 5S running iOS 8.1.3. I seem to recall reading in another thread that the recent updates on both MacOS X and iOS would fix WiFi syncing, but it hasn't.

My phone sees my computer on the wireless network and has the correct matching secret. When I hit "Sync Now", it says "Sync started" and then nothing happens until a dialog pops up with "Sync Problem: The operation couldn't be completed. Operation timed out." If I hit the button for "More Info" it states "Error Domain="NSPOSIXErrorDomainCode=60. The operation couldn't be completed. Operation timed out."

As suggested in another thread I tried switching back and forth between the standard and 5GHz wireless networks, which made no difference on the above.

I can't go wiping out vaults to attempt a clean sync either, as I have no easy way of verifying that there are no entries on my phone that do not exist on my computer.

Given that the ability to synchronize between my computer and my phone was one of the prime selling points of 1Password, this state of affairs is quite disappointing. It is also extremely unprofessional, especially for a company in the "security" business, to make your users rely on your forums for support.

    Hi @gawashburn,

Recent updates to OS X did help alleviate certain network related issues, those specifically concerning Bonjour and we also altered our behaviour so we didn't hit up against the upper limits of Bonjour names. These accounted for many but certainly not all issues.

I would like you to check the following please.

iOS: In iOS Settings > General > About make sure the Name of your iOS device doesn't look odd at all e.g. no (2) at the end or anything like that, edit if needed.

Mac: In System Preferences > Sharing do the same as above, make sure your Computer Name is normal looking and doesn't have anything like (2) at the end, edit if needed.

Please also note we are aware that accented characters in names causes issues.

Next I would like you to disable Wi-Fi Sync on your iOS device. You can do this by following the steps in this screenshot.

It will look the same but say Wi-Fi instead of Dropbox.

Next I would like you to reboot both your Mac and your iOS device. Then re-enable Wi-Fi Sync.

    Does that make any difference?

If it doesn't I would like you to try and Create an ad hoc network

Does that make a difference? If it does please not it isn't meant as a solution, merely a troubleshooting step.

Please let us know how you get along with those suggestions.

My iOS Device and computer names are as expected with no trailing numeric postfix. The names do not include any accented characters.

The screenshot didn't come through. I searched but didn't see any mechanism for disabling WiFi sync on iOS.

Creating an adhoc network yielded the same behavior as on my normal wireless network.

I searched but didn't see any mechanism for disabling WiFi sync on iOS.

If you do still want to try it go to 1P for iOS Settings > Sync > Sync Service and then Disable Sync (towards the bottom of the screen).

I see nothing about "Sync Service" on my phone. After opening "Settings"

    After opening "Sync"

Are you sure you have actually used WiFi Sync, or are you just guessing?

It looks from that as though you've not set up wifi sync. Please post a screen shot of the next screen you see if, in the screen you've posted above, you click on Start Syncing. (if it shows anything confidential make sure you delete that from the screen shot before posting it.)

(Apologies if I don't get back to you quickly again as I'm off to sleep here in the UK!)

I definitely get the impression you have never used WiFi Sync on iOS, as there is nowhere to perform "setup". Here are the remaining steps in my attempt to sync. After hitting "Start Syncing":

    After hitting "Sync using Wi-Fi":

    After selecting my computer "confluence":

    After hitting "Sync Now":

    The failure dialog:

And for good measure here is the Wi-Fi Sync window open on my Mac when I'm doing the above on my phone:

I've been using 1Password for years and I'm having the same problems with wifi sync between my Mac (10.10.2, 1p v5.1 510035) and iPhone (8.1.3 (12B466), 1p v 5.2 (502015). I've been using wifi sync ever since this feature was available. It's no longer working.

What I see on my phone is that the sync has started but it has timed out every time I've tried to sync. I've tried rebooting phone and computer to no effect. There's an error msg on my phone that reads:

"Sync Problem. Error domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomainCode=60 "The operation couldn't be completed. Operation timed out."

Nothing much interesting in the log but here's a recent extract:

@ericv Your issue is completely unrelated to the one I and @tmeadow are encountering. I'd recommend creating a separate discussion thread.

    @gawashburn:

I definitely get the impression you have never used WiFi Sync on iOS,

I'm sorry to give that impression. I use it all the time and have used it since it was introduced. Maybe you don't appreciate that I'm wasn't seeing exactly the same screens as you show in your screen shots. I understand why—now you've posted the other shots.

In fact, the first of the shots you posted in post #7 is exactly the "setup" screen I was referring to. Sorry if my terminology was confusing. To make it absolutely clear, on my iOS devices I do not see that screen because wifi sync has already been set up on those devices. That's what I meant in my post #6 when I said I thought you'd not set up wifi sync on the phone.

Your screen shots make the whole matter much clearer, thanks. However, I can't for the moment think of any other solutions to your problem—provided you checked the name of your iOS device as mentioned in posts # 2 & 4 and it's not "odd" in any way.

The one other thing you might try is rebooting your router to see if that makes any difference.

I have on occasion seen the same error as you mention in your first post but it's always disappeared if I either disable and re-enable wifi sync on all devices or (sometimes) reboot the recalcitrant device. I'm sorry that's not working for you.

I guess someone from AgileBits will be along to give more advice. Sorry that I can't help further at present.

    Hi @gawashburn,

Apologies about the image not being visible, I made a mistake it seems when I wrote the post and two sets of markup resulted in the linked image not being visible.

I don't see you mention the results of trying an ad hoc network after Stephen_C helped determine that Wi-Fi Sync wasn't currently set up. I would certainly like to see if it now does make a difference.

If it doesn't then we will request a diagnostic report from both the Mac and the the iOS device and see if there is anything obvious on your system or in the logs that might point towards a cause.

Directly prior to generating the logs I would like you to do the following.

on your iOS device I would like you to open 1Password for iOS and then go to Settings > Advanced > Diagnostics > Log Settings and enable the Sync and Wi-Fi Sync options. Then with Wi-Fi Sync already set up go to Settings > Sync and select the Sync Now button. Let it time out and then follow the guides below. This way the latest entries in the logs will pertain to your issue.

    —Mac—
    https://guides.agilebits.com/kb/1password4/en/topic/diagnostics-report#mac4

    —iOS—
    https://guides.agilebits.com/kb/1password4/en/topic/diagnostics-report#ios4

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+ forum@agilebits.com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

Once you've sent the Report a post here with the ticket ID will help us to keep an eye out for it. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure what you mean by "Stephen_C helped determine that Wi-Fi Sync wasn't currently set up". Where in my screenshots did you see that it wasn't set up? It looked like it was fully configured for synchronizing with my desktop to me? If it isn't "set up", why is it even allowing me to start syncing?

I just checked your post where you fixed the configuration image and that is not how the software currently behaves. If I select my "Primary Vault" from the Vault configuration page, it takes to me a screen exactly like the one I posted where it gives me the option to select "Start Syncing". I have no "Sync Service" option listed. Are you sure that "Sync Service" is used for anything other than DropBox or iCloud?

  • Hi @gawashburn,

I think what they mean by "not currently set up" is that when Sync itself is fully configured, going to Sync in iOS will show a screen that details how you're currently setup. The fact that you're greeted by the options for how to sync is an indication that sync isn't yet fully configured. It won't be fully configured until it has done its first full sync.

You're doing it right. And if the Mac (or Windows) device would properly answer the call, sync would start and the sync setup screens would disappear and you'd be greeted by the general Sync view which tells you which Sync Service you're connected to, when the last sync occurred etc. Here's what that looks like:

So... the problem here isn't the iOS device. I'm about certain of that. The problem is that the iOS device is failing to connect to the Wi-Fi server. If you send us a Diagnostics Report we might have a better idea of what's going on and can have recommendations for how to resolve it. To do that, simply follow the instructions on this page, and email it to support+forums@agilebits.com. Include a link to this forum post so that we can link things up properly.

    I hope this helps.

I'm surprised no one suggested I look at

    https://discussions.agilebits.com/discussion/29868/wifi-sync-in-yosemite-ios-8-0-2-please-ensure-that-the-os-x-firewall-allows-1password

Indeed, if I turn off my firewall synchronization works. However, even if I add 1Password and 1Password mini to the list of applications that can accept incoming connections, synchronization fails once my firewall is re-enabled. Is there some other way I'm supposed to configure the MacOS X firewall to allow wifi syncing?

    Hi @gawashburn,

Once we've requested a diagnostic report we continue the troubleshooting in email. We try to avoid two routes of communication as it will either lead to duplication or confusion.

As we are working with you via email I'm going to go ahead and close this thread but if you have any further questions or issues please do post.
