Install on 2nd Mac w/o Paying Twice
I previously purchased direct from the agile bits website for install on my iMac. I now wish to install on my MacBook, and I understand that in order for my vault to sync, I must download the software from the App Store. However, they are asking me to pay the full purchase price of $50. How do I avoid having to pay twice?

That is not quite right. In order to avoid paying twice you should re-download from the place where you originally bought 1P (i.e., either the Mac App Store or the AgileBits store). If you bought from the Mac App Store you'll need to be logged in with the same Apple ID as you used when you bought 1P originally, of course. If you bought from the AgileBits store you can simply transfer your existing licence from the iMac to your MacBook because you're allowed to use 1P on both machines under the licence terms.
The part of your statement that's incorrect is this:
in order for my vault to sync, I must download the software from the App Store.
Both the Mac App Store and the AgileBits store versions support Dropbox to sync your 1P data and that's what you'll need to use if you want to sync the data between your two Macs. Both versions also support local wifi sync—but you can't use that to sync 1P data between two Macs. The Mac App Store version supports sync of 1P data via iCloud (the AgileBits store version does not support that). You could use that to sync two Macs (so long as both use the same Apple ID) but it's rather less versatile, in any event, than Dropbox sync (for example, it won't currently cope with multiple vaults).
I hope that clarifies matters but if there's still any confusion please post again.

Hi @lori,
It looks like you've got a lot of advice there from Stephen_C  If you have and follow up questions or are still unsure of something please do ask.

Steve: A belated thanks. I've now figured it out after reading your post. Having software available from both the App Store and the vendor web site adds another layer of confusion and difficulty for those of us with more than one device (I have 1Password on several OS, iOS and PC devices). Wish it were easier. Iori

@Iori: I agree it can be a bit confusing with different platforms (and even different versions for the same!). Hopefully this can be simplified in the future. We still offer both because some customers want to use iCloud Sync (which Apple only allows in Mac App Store apps), and others prefer to bypass the MAS and get the app from AgileBits directly, because we can be a bit more flexible with regard to bundles and licensing.
I'm glad you got the help you needed. Be sure to reach out if you need anything else! :)
