When I reset a password, and then use 1Password to generate it, it wipes my username

Very common issue I have:

  • Can't remember a password from before I started using 1Password
  • Reset password flow
  • Use 1Password to generate the new password. It is saved without a username since it is capturing from the reset password page
  • Now every time I try and login, it wipes the username field while filling the password
  • The fix is to copy paste the password in after typing username, but then 1Password doesn't update it automatically (ex: today on jetblue.com)

As a result my 1Password is a mess with passwords only. It's easy enough to fix by manually editing a bunch but it drives me crazy. I realize it might be tricky but it seems like something that should be addressed because it must be happening to a lot of people who reset passwords. There is no reason for 1password chrome extension to wipe a username when it doesn't have one, and there it should also be smarter about adding / saving the username when it can.

  • Hi @urthos,

Do you have more than one item for that web page? I suspect you have at least two—the original login item with the old password, the new password item with only the new password. Normally after changing the password on a site, 1Password should ask you to save the new one and it would save in the original Login Item. However, depending on the password change page, it may not have detected you were changing the original login item.

To correct this, look for the Password item, and copy the new password into the password field of the original Login item. Also copy the website field from the Password Item into the Login Item, if they are different. After that, try it again.

If that doesn't work, please let us know and we can investigate further.

    Cheers,
    Kevin
