WiFi Sync Is Not Working
Hi AgileBits Team,
I have a client who is trying to use the WiFi-Sync from Mac to iPhone ( iOS 9.2.1 (13D20))
I used the steps located on https://support.1password.com/wifi-troubleshooting/mac.html and actually just went ahead altogether and removed our wifi-network from both the Mac and iPhone. Quit all apps and restarted both products. Reselected the company wifi and re-entered the password.
The iPhone does not see the 1Password Server at all. I did also try to change the name of the computer ( / SysPref/Sharing) to simply Jeff.
Since this is a company wifi, I can not reset the network itself.
Curious, but I know I can turn on server on my own computer but since my iPhone syncs via DropBox, I can't seem to access the WiFi Sync. Is there a way to do this? I'm only interested to see if the issue is the same with my configuration. Only if this can help in this issue.
Thank you as always,
Prince

Hi @JoorMomz,
I'm sorry Wi-Fi sync has been difficult to setup for your client!
When following the steps in our Wi-Fi Sync troubleshooting article, were you able to get it working when you created an ad-hoc wireless network? We don't expect you to have to go through that every time you want to sync of course, but depending on whether or not that worked, it will give us a better idea of why the iPhone isn't finding the Mac normally.

In order to test Wi-Fi Sync in 1Password on your iPhone, you would need to disable Dropbox sync first. (On your Mac, you can have Dropbox and Wi-Fi sync enabled at the same time, but in the iOS app you can only have one enabled at a time.) If you try that, we'd be interested to hear if you have the same problem, or if your iPhone finds 1Password on your Mac - that should at least tell us if the problem is related to that network in general, or if it's only a problem with for your client's devices.
Let us know how it all goes, thanks! :)

Hi @Drew_AG,
I'm glad I posed that question. I removed my three vaults and tried to do WiFi-Sync and it didn't work.
I went ahead and followed the steps from earlier, but now on my unit to see if maybe it would work on mine, and the issue is the same. I am unable to see the 1Password Server, though on. The 'Refresh List' option is available on my phone but nothing ever shows up.Following your recommendation, I set up the AdHoc network and it worked fine. Set up the secret key and it was able to sync.
I haven't tried it on the clients unit yet but hope for him to have some time this afternoon and will give it a go. If you have thoughts before then, feel free to let me know and I'll try it on his as well.
Thank you again. Love this product!!

Hi @JoorMomz,
Good to see that you were able to get things going with the Ad Hoc network. As Drew mentioned, we don't really consider using Ad Hoc networks as a real solution but more of a troubleshooting step. It tells us that the iOS device and the Mac device are behaving correctly as it limits things to just those devices. Which would point to something like the router as being the thing that's blocking access to the Mac from the iOS device when they're both on the same wi-fi network. It may be worth asking someone who knows more about how your company router is setup to see if it's firewalling devices automatically.

That makes perfect sense, thank you. I meant to try this at home since I have access to my systems and I can reset everything a billion times if needed. I'll reach out to my client to see if he tried this at home yet and will update if my Ops Team gives me any info regarding the firewalls we have in place here.
Are the following the main ports for me to notify them about:
_Configure security softwareIf you’re using other security, firewall, or proxy software, you may need to set an exception for 1Password and Bonjour, or open UDP port 5353 and 6262 for both outbound and inbound traffic, which is the port that Bonjour (Apple’s implementation of Zero-configuration networking) uses for connecting available services on the network. Contact the vendor for assistance._
Thank you again,
Prince

Hi @JoorMomz,
Bonjour runs on those ports, but we need more than those ports open. Having the bonjour ports open should let you get to the point where you can see the Mac listed on the iOS device. But if that's all you have open, you may not be able to connect to the Mac still. Bonjour will dynamically assign a port to the Mac, so there's no one specific port that our Wi-Fi server runs on. Which makes it great for the vast majority of cases, but for cases like this it can sometimes get in the way.

Gotcha.
Alright, I'll escalate this on my end but sounds like this might be a no-go in a company like ours, due to security implementations. I'll see what they say or ask and will try my best to get the client to test this at home to centralize the issue as being specific to our network - which is what it clearly sounds like. I'll update the ticket once I have more information. Thank you.0 -
I'm glad Rick was able to help explain how that all works. We'll be interested to hear what you're able to find out, looking forward to hearing back from you! :)

Hi @Drew_AG and Team. Feel free to close this up. It is our hardware firewall that's set up to block these kinds of connections. The client won't be able to give me an update yet due to some scheduled events but if the issue continues even through AdHoc networking, it would be a different issue altogether and I'll troubleshoot any specifics then. Thank you, great support!

You're very welcome @JoorMomz.
Have you considered maybe using 1Password for Teams? Since all of that traffic just uses port 443 (standard HTTPS), the firewalls shouldn't get in your way.
