Dealing with Duplicate Passwords

Just a thought on how 1Password might be improved in the area of fixing duplicate passwords. The security audit area does a good job of helping to identify the same passwords used multiple times.

My thinking is that if I have used the same password for multiple things, it probably isn't the sort of password that I want to be using anywhere. I want to, and should, change all of them.

Here's the thing. When I have changed all but the last one, the last one is no longer a duplicate password, so it disappears from the audit. How would it be if that last one hung around until either its password was changed or the section of the audit was left?

  • Hi @RonHeiby ,

Thanks for taking the time to write in. I can certainly see your point. We'll consider that for a future release. In the meantime, I suggest tagging that last password with "needs changing" or similar. Just do that before you change the second last password. Then, when you have that one left, you can click that tag in the sidebar to find it. Once you change it, remove the tag. I realize that solution is not as elegant as your request; it's just something to do in the meantime.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

That seems like a reasonable workaround. Too late for me, though, as I've already dealt with my duplicates. And I'll be dealing with those remaining "last duplicates" over the next month or so, as I work through my entire vault, updating everything that still exists with random passwords.

Meanwhile, I came up with another workaround. Since most of my duplicate passwords are one of only a few simple ones that I can actually remember, using the Advanced Search capability I learned about in the Take Control book to search explicitly for those few passwords seems to let me find those "last duplicates".

    Hi @RonHeiby,

Well, I'm glad to hear that you're doing a password audit and cleaning up all duplicate password - good on you! (It reminds me that I'm nearly due for the same thing ...)

Thanks for sharing this workaround! It's great to know that the book has been a good resource for you. :)

I've been using 1Password for years, on Mac, iOS, Android, and (when forced) Windows. Just got around to reading the book, and found at least half a dozen good tips plus a whole new way of doing things that should make things faster / easier.
