Possibly you were looking at a tutorial for a different OS, because that's not the way to get to 1PW preferences on a Mac. Or maybe I am misunderstanding your question.
It's the standard procedure that one uses for any program. Just open 1Password (NOT the mini or the browser extension), and then Preferences is a submenu of the 1Password menu item.

You said, "It's the standard procedure that one uses for any program. Just open 1Password (NOT the mini or the browser extension), and then Preferences is a submenu of the 1Password menu item".
This does not help. When I hit 1 password icon I set up it simply brings me to sign in page. When I sign in it brings me to page for vaults etc. No menu or choice I see for preferences. Could it be it's not available on trial version

At the very top of your monitor is a bar, called a menu bar. In the left hand corner of that bar will be the Apple logo. Directly next to that will be the menu for whatever application you have open and are currently viewing. Select Preferences from that menu when 1Password is open.
I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

I would add that the second item in the menu bar might not say 1Password, but might say Safari or Finder.
That is because several programs can run at the same time, and windows from these may be showing. The name of the second item in the menu bar will be that of the program that is in the foreground. If you are in this situation, just clicking on the 1Password window will bring it into the foreground and you will then see the menu bar as in Ben's picture.
Sorry my earlier comment was not clear to you, hope this is clear (or not relevant).
You are the second person who has asked this question recently. I wonder why, as the answer is very basic Mac knowledge. Every Mac program has a menu bar similar to the one Ben showed. If you aren't aware of that, there will be other basic things you aren't aware of, and sooner or later you will get into trouble. I would seriously recommend spending some time on learning, whether by reading a book, going to a course, or getting a friend to teach you.

@danco That's correct! In macOS, the menu bar changes its contents based on the currently active/foreground application. As you move from application to application, the contents of the menu bar changes accordingly. Here's a link to Apple's support documentation on the menu bar: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25077
