I do think there is still room for improvement here, and hope we'll be able to smooth the process out a bit.
I thought the whole purpose of the Safari Extension app was precisely to allow me to integrate directly within the browser (even without the app on my Mac as you mentioned yourself. Why it it even going back and forth between the two then?? Way does it need unlocking in the app itself and not within the browser through he extension?
You have the option of either using the extension with integration between it and the desktop app or as an independent setup. If you want the two to unlock together, and to be able to use Touch ID / Apple Watch unlock, then unlocking has to be handled by the desktop app. If you want to use them separately you can disable the "Integrate with 1Password App" option by right clicking on the 1Password icon in the Safari toolbar and selecting Settings. Alternatively you can turn off integration with any browsers by opening the 1Password app turning off 1Password > Preferences > Browser > Connect with 1Password in the browser.
