TouchID no longer working for Mac in Chrome or Safari

On my Mac, using Chrome, the option to use TouchID within the browser is no longer available. Everything else works fine. I just have to type my master password each time.

A previous post by another user received advice:

During an update, the communication between the browser extensions and the app is severed by macOS. The following steps will restart that connection.

Look for our helper in the menu bar near the WiFi indicator and the clock. Right-click (Option-click) on the helper and select quit 1Password completely.
Quit your browser(s).
Wait a few seconds and then open 1Password from the Dock or the Applications folder and unlock
Open your browser. Repeat for each browser.

This solution did not work for me. I've tried reinstalling the app, removing and re-adding the plug-in, and those instructions mentioned above. When I added the plug-in to Chrome, again, I used 1Password app to initiate it. But still nothing. This has been an issue for several weeks now and it's getting on my nerves.

    Hello @JerryHobby! 👋

I'm sorry that you’re unable to unlock 1Password using Touch ID for 1Password on your Mac. Are you able to use Touch ID to unlock the Mac itself? If you are then I'd like you to please do the following:

    1. Completely turn off your Mac and then turn it on to restart it. (Don't skip this step.)
    2. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
    3. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Touch ID & Password.
    4. Turn off all of the features, then turn all of them back on again.
    5. Go back to 1Password and choose 1Password > Settings from the menu bar.
    6. Click the Security icon, then turn on "Touch ID".
    7. Lock 1Password by choosing 1Password > Lock from the menu bar.
    8. Now try unlocking 1Password using Touch ID.

If that doesn't work then let me know and I can provide next steps.

I performed all those steps. Currently, 1Password APP will unlock using TouchID. But in Chrome, it does not. The app works fine. It's the browser extension doesn't seem to work properly.

On that screenshot - you see the 1Password icon next to the form field. If I hover it, it displays that message to unlock 1Password. But, clicking on it does nothing. To proceed, I have to go to the icon on my extension in the toolbar. That extension always asks me to type the password. If I recall correctly, that icon in the form field used to accept touchID and would continue from there. That's the part that's broken.

  • Hi @JerryHobby - I'm sorry to hear that those steps didn't help. 1Password in your browser should share its lock state with the main 1Password app, so it sounds like there's an issue with the communication between the two. I'd like to ask you to try resetting that connection, using the steps below:

    1. Right-click the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar and choose Settings.
    2. Under General, disable "Integrate with 1Password app".
    3. Fully quit 1Password app and browser.
    4. Restart the 1Password app and then open your browser.
    5. Right-click the 1Password icon in your browser toolbar and choose Settings.
    6. Under General, re-enable "Integrate with 1Password app".
    7. Test things out with the extension, are you then able to unlock with Touch ID?

Let me know how you get on and I'll be here to help with next steps. 🙂

After following these steps, I still have the issue. I removed the extension from Chrome and installed it again. Same issues. The app works perfectly, but on the browser plug-in, I see this on the General tab. Note the error message. I also tried the BETA version of the plug-in, but same result. Restarting the app and the browser several times.

I'm sorry that Touch ID still isn't working with 1Password in the browser. If you see the same status message even after unlocking the desktop app then looks like something on your Mac is preventing the desktop app from communicating with the browser extension. So that I can find a solution, I'd like you to send in the following:

Attach both files to an email message addressed to support+forum@1password.com.

    With your email please include:
