how to separate family account entries

Three of us have been sharing a family membership account for several years. However, one member of the family now needs to have her own individual account, and would like to preserve those login/etc items that are relevant for her needs.

So I would think we do this: (1) she establishes her own individual account, with her own 1Password credentials; (2) I remove her from the existing family account and, ideally, (3) migrate those logins/etc that she cares about, from the family account into her new individual account.

Or is there a better way to do this? Regardless, your guidance is appreciated wrt specifics of exactly how we should go about this the "right" way. Step #1 is obvious on how-to, but I'm not quite clear on how we accomplish steps #2 and #3.

FWIW she is on iOS with both an iPad and iPhone, currently using 1Password7, while the family account is using 1Password8 on both iOS (iPhone) and MacOS (MacBook).

Many thanks.

  • Hello nikadog0217! 👋

Thanks for reaching out! You're correct that your family member will need to create a new 1Password account of her own, add both accounts to the same 1Password app, and then move her items from her old account to the new account. Once she's confirmed that she's moved all of her items to her new account, you can then remove her from your 1Password Families membership.

We have a blog article that goes into more specific steps here: Parting ways: How to divide a shared 1Password account

First, she'll need to sign up for her own account. Then, to migrate her items to the new account, I recommend that she use 1Password 8 since it's the latest version of 1Password. She can install 1Password 8 on all devices using the following guide: Get the 1Password apps

These articles will help her to add both of her accounts to the app and move her items from the old account to the new account:

Once she's moved her items, she should check to make sure that she sees all of her items when she log in to her new 1Password account on 1Password.com (in the browser, not the app).

Only after she's confirmed that she's moved all of her items and sees them on 1Password.com, you can remove her from your 1Password Families membership: Add and remove family members

    I hope that helps.
